Another dead dictator and a KDP first - now what do I do???

This is the post that I didn't think that I'd have to write - Saddam Hussein was executed, and it turns out that one person had him - Mike Miller. The game rules are pretty specific:

Executions don't count. If you put a death-row inmate on your list, you'd better hope that they commit suicide if you want the credit.

I'm not sure if Mike was counting on that, or if he'd overlooked that rule. In either event, I'm going to disqualify this hit. Right now I don't have the KDP set to actually disqualify a hit, so I'm going to just leave Hussein showing as alive until I fix it. It might be later tonight. It might not be for months.

12/30/2006 NOTE: I've fixed it now - the site now shows when a hit has been disqualified.

Ford shakes up the KDP standings

Wow... This game started off big, and now it's ending big. Former President Gerald Ford died Tuesday at the age of 93, and 41 people had him, including Kelly Keegan, who becomes the first person this year to get a 5th hit, and moves up from second into first place.

Mike Roche's Roche's Candidates List, Mary Ann McSorley, Mike Spinney, Grady Harmon, Charlie Daley and Russ McDonald all see their fourth hit.

Amy Hawthorne, Cathryn Innacola, Tony Eisenberger, Russ McDonald-2, Sandy Downey and Mike Roche's Roche's Famous Really Old People List each record a third hit.

Beth Birchall, Carol Ann Daley, Chuck Daley, Brad Hope, Terri Kaufman, Janet Daley, Bob Razem's List 2, Paul Slaght, Amy Hawthorne our first holiday hit with James Brown's passing. Amy gets her second hit of the game, as well as in the last week. This is Amy's first career solo, and she moves up from 31st to 21st place.

Congrats, Amy!

Loss of Nilsson

Found out that Birgit Nilsson died on Christmas, but that her death wasn't announced until today. Unfortunately for Natalie, our rules are pretty clear about this situation:

Any celebrity death not announced by that time does not count. Likewise, any deaths that occur BEFORE that time will not count, even if the death was not announced until AFTER the start of the game. Tough luck. In this event, the alternate pick will be used (see below).

So I've removed Nilsson from Natalie's list and promoted her alternate up.

2006 Entry Closed, Lists Made Public

The blackout period has ended, and the 2006 edition of Kaufman's Dead Pool is finally FULLY underway and available on the website! I thought that we would end up topping last year's number of entries, and while we came close, we didn't quite make it - we ended up with 74 entries. If you have not sent me your list by this point, then I am afraid that you'll have to watch from the sidelines.

Some players of note: Rich Place's dog Clint has returned after taking 4 years to get together a new list. The whole lack of opposable thumbs thing. The Eschmans didn't return, so that leaves my daughter Madison and her randomly-drawn list as the only minor playing. Andrew Gonzalez returns after taking 5 years off to do lesser pursuits such as play Rugby in England and get a Law degree. We've also got some mysterious players including A to Z Chicks, Brave Sir Robin and Judy Judgement-Day. Toe Tag returns for a second year of identifying bodies, and you should probably avoid riding on the Death Van, whose list is comprised entirely of people with "Van" in their name!

Some people got bit HARD by the referral bug, including our current front-runner, Carol Ann Daley, who brought along 6 players, of which 2 are new. Kelly Keegan passed the fun along to the rest of the gang at Z-92 in Omaha, including the morning show guys, Todd 'n Tyler, who are back for their second game.

In addition to the regular fun of the Dead Pool, we see the return of DeathLotto!. All players are entered into this wacky no-skill side-game, with the prize of a KDP sticker or some other cheap junk I'll try to find by the end of the year. Speaking of winning DeathLotto players - if you're one of the 12 (or so) winners of DeathLotto2005, please give me your address so that I can send you your sticker.

One thing that I'm going to ask everyone to do ASAP is to verify that I've entered your list correctly. While you're on the site, also check out the Referral Family Tree to confirm that you are getting proper credit for all of your referred people.

And finally - I want to take a moment and thank everyone for being so supportive and (hopefully) having so much fun. There is simply no way that this game could have gotten so big without everyone's help.

Good luck, everyone - and here's to another exciting year!

Thanks,

Gene

2005 Game over, 2006 Game underway!

I can't believe that another game has come and gone, and what an exciting year 2005 was for the KDP: We had 4 of the top 10 most-picked celebs go, giving a record 95% of our players at least one hit. For only the second time in the history of the game, at least one player (three, in this case) recorded 6 hits, with one of those going even further to give the KDP our first 7-hitter.

So big congrats to Joe Biasi for getting those 7 hits and finishing at the top of the heap. Joe wins 75% of the collected winnings, for a total of $562.50!!!.
Additionally, 2004 KDP champ Bob Razem turned in a solid follow-up performance, coming in second place and taking home $112.50. And last but not least, Brad Hope collects $75 for finishing in third place.

2005 saw the first game-within-the-game, the DeathLotto. This was a no-skill game whereby I randomly distributed all of the celebrities in the game's database to some or all of the players. I actually did this 3 times; once for everyone, once only for returning players, and finally, only for players that have referred others. Each winner receives a really cool KDP sticker that is not at all derivative of the various OBX oval stickers that you've seen around.
Those players receiving stickers are:
Bob Razem (3 stickers)
Candy York
Cathryn Innacola
Cynthia Eschman
Marty Eschman
Mike Spinney
Natalie Tyler
Rich Place
Shawn Martin
Tim Shaffer
Sticker winners - send me your address please!
